How to apply for USAJOBS jobs from Puerto Rico

What USAJOBS is

USAJOBS (usajobs.gov) is the official employment portal of the United States federal government. Practically every federal civilian position (including those posted for Puerto Rico) is announced and applied for through this portal. It is free: neither USAJOBS nor the agencies charge to apply.

Puerto Rico has a significant federal presence: the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), Homeland Security (DHS), the Army at Fort Buchanan, agriculture agencies, federal courts and more. Those positions appear on USAJOBS just like in any state.

Step 1: create your account

USAJOBS uses login.gov for access. You need an email address, a strong password and a two-step authentication method (for example, your phone). With that account you sign in to USAJOBS and complete your profile: contact information, eligibility (for example, whether you are a veteran) and work preferences.

Step 2: prepare your documents

Most federal applications ask for a resume (ideally in federal format, more detailed than a private-sector one) and supporting documents depending on your case: college transcripts if the position requires education, form DD-214 if you claim veterans' preference, or special eligibility documentation.

Step 3: search Puerto Rico positions

Read the full announcement before applying. Pay attention to the "Who may apply" section: some positions are only for current federal employees, others are open to the general public.

Step 4: submit the application

The announcement's Apply button takes you to the agency's application system, where you answer an experience questionnaire and attach your documents. Answer the questionnaire honestly and consistently: your answers must be supported by what your resume says.

Submit before the closing date, the system closes automatically. Afterwards you can track the status of each application from your USAJOBS account.

Common mistakes to avoid

These mistakes disqualify strong applications every day:

• Using a one-page private-sector resume that doesn't detail dates, hours per week or specific duties.
• Not including required documents (transcripts, DD-214).
• Applying to positions where you don't meet the "Who may apply" eligibility.
• Waiting until the last day: if the announcement says it closes after receiving a certain number of applications, it can close early.
