Where the openings are

Tourism concentrates jobs in Condado, Isla Verde, Old San Juan and Dorado, plus resorts on the east and west coasts, Vieques and Culebra. San Juan's cruise port drives shoreside jobs, and the airport and airlines hire separately.

Employers come in two kinds: large chains with formal HR, their own portal and benefits; and small operators (guesthouses, restaurants, tours, rentals) who hire by referral and move fast. Both routes work, but you search them differently.

Roles that take you without experience

Housekeeping, kitchen helper, busser, valet, bellhop, front desk agent, certified lifeguard, banquet staff and maintenance. These are learned on site, and attitude and punctuality count for more than the résumé.

Conversational English is what raises your pay fastest in this sector. Front desk, concierge, banquets and tours pay better and almost always require handling both languages comfortably in front of a guest.

Season, tips and shifts

High season runs roughly December through April, and that is when hiring peaks. Ask directly whether the position is seasonal or permanent: there is nothing wrong with seasonal work, but you want to know in advance, not in May.

On tips, ask how they are distributed, whether there is a pool, who is in the pool, and how often they are paid out. On shifts, ask how many weekends a month and whether shifts rotate. The answers to those four questions tell you more about the job than the full posting does.

Does minimum wage apply to a tipped employee?

Yes. There are specific rules about the tip credit, but your total cannot fall below the applicable minimum wage. If tips do not get you there, the employer has to make up the difference.

Is a seasonal position worth taking?

It is often the fastest way into a large chain. Many permanent employees started in high season and stayed. Say so from the start: that you are interested in staying on permanently if a slot opens.
