Federal resume vs. private-sector resume: the differences that matter

The key differences

The private resume sells; the federal one documents. A private recruiter spends seconds on your resume looking for impact; a federal HR specialist rates it point by point against the announcement's requirements and needs complete evidence.

• Length: private 1–2 pages; federal 2 pages maximum, since September 2025 USAJOBS does not accept longer resumes.
• Dates: private accepts years only; federal requires month and year, plus hours per week.
• Content: private highlights achievements; federal details duties AND achievements using the announcement's vocabulary.
• Design: private allows creative layouts; federal favors simple, readable text.
• Tailoring: both are tailored, but in the federal case tailoring decides whether your experience 'counts'.

When to use each

Keep two versions. Use the full federal version for every USAJOBS application and for Government of Puerto Rico jobs that ask for similar detail. Use the short version for private companies, job fairs and LinkedIn.

The federal version is also your 'master document': you can trim it down into the private version without losing information.

The most common mistake among Puerto Rico applicants

Sending the one-page private resume to federal positions. The rater cannot assume anything that isn't written: without hours per week or detailed duties, years of real experience can go uncredited.
